Social Anxiety
Social Anxiety Disorder, or Social Phobia, is characterized by the persistent fear of being negatively evaluated by others. Social Anxiety Disorder is one of the most common psychological problems. It often begins in childhood and manifests as excessive shyness. Research suggests it affects about 15 million adults in the U.S.
While almost everyone has experienced shyness or nervousness in social situations from time to time (i.e., before a first date or a big presentation), for some people Social Anxiety can be very impairing and effect them in a wide range of situations. They may feel worried that they will embarrass themselves or be judged negatively, even with people they know well! A person with Social Anxiety may begin to avoid social situations or situations where they fear negative evaluation, such as attending social gatherings, initiating conversations, dating, or speaking up in class or at work.
Social Anxiety Disorder frequently responds well to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). For more information about Social Anxiety treatment in Fort Lauderdale and the surrounding South Florida area please contact our office.
