We live in a culture that is undoubtedly preoccupied with physical appearance. Disordered eating can take may forms and affect children, adolescents, and adults as well as men and women. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder are common presentations that can be effectively helped with a comprehensive Cognitive Behavioral Treatment plan.
Below is a list of symptoms that might be suggestive of an eating disorder:
An obsessive level of concern with food, nutrition, calories, exercise, weight or body image
Unrealistic or overly negative body image
Food rituals; needing to prepare or eat items in a certain manner or at certain times
Excessive exercise, preoccupation with exercise, or excessive fear of gaining weight when not able to engage in one's regular exercise routine
Episodes of binge eating, where large quantities of food are consumed
Perception of lack of control over eating
Eating more food than intended too quickly, or consistently eating when not hungry, or to the point you feel ill
Major changes in weight (although this is not always the case, as many individuals with eating disorders actually maintain a normal weight despite their eating disordered behavior)
Purging behaviors which may include vomiting after eating, as well as excessive exercise or laxative use
